NRCC Names Scheller to ‘Young Guns’ Program
ALLENTOWN – The National Republican Congressional Committee today named Allentown businesswoman Lisa Scheller to its “Young Guns” program for House candidates who show strong promise of winning next year.
The program, which has helped send dozens of Republican newcomers to Congress, focuses on candidates running in competitive races and who have met a minimum threshold in campaign organization and who show potential for winning.
Scheller, a former Lehigh County commissioner and president of Silberline Manufacturing, announced her candidacy Oct. 14. She is challenging first-term Democrat Susan Wild.
“I’m incredibly excited to be selected for this program,” Scheller said. “It shows that the Republican leadership is not only excited about my agenda for more jobs, secure borders and a stronger economy, but they believe I can win.”
Scheller has already won the support of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
The 7th District includes Lehigh, Northampton and parts of southern Monroe counties.
Co-founded in the 2007-2008 election cycle by former Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor, current Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan, the program seeks to retake the Republican Majority in the House of Representatives.
Young Guns is broken into three levels containing measurable goals that a candidate must achieve to advance in the program. Candidates who achieve Young Gun status have successfully collaborated with the NRCC and completed the benchmarks that establish a path to victory on Election Day.
In the 2010 wave election, more than two-thirds of the NRCC Young Guns (62 of 92) were elected to Congress. In 2012, the program helped to elect 35 new Republican Members to the 113th Congress and 45 new members to the 114th Congress.
